This course studies the question of Victorian social classes, not from a purely economic or political angle, but mostly from the point of view of cultural history. Using various Victorian primary documents (press articles, essays and reports, paintings, photographs, cartoons, theatrical bills, excerpts from novels and plays.), we shall endeavour to analyse and discuss the (self-)perception of Victorian social classes, their specific values and cultures, as well as their moral and cultural struggles.
