This course provides a foundation for students to develop a critical understanding of material culture, that is to say the objects of culture that surround us, how they are made and used. Together, we will delve into the visual, aesthetic and social aspect of cultural objects: this field of study aims at providing students with a skill-set which will complement literature and history classes. It will focus on two “things of art” and their material history (16th-21st c.): the book and the museum.
